SERVICES FOR SCHOOLS

Local History Resources

Local history resources for topic preparation by teachers, including reference books, archives and photographs relating to Kirkcudbright in particular and the Stewartry (Kirkcudbrightshire) in general. Some archive material can be photocopied for school use, and slides and mounted photographs are also available for short term loan on certain topics.

Museum Visits

School visits most welcome at:

The Stewartry Museum,
Kirkcudbright

· A traditional museum with varied and extensive permanent exhibition presenting the human and natural history of the Stewartry. A general museum activity leaflet is available for children. The Museum Curator is available to give an introductory talk to school parties on the museum and its collections

· Programme of temporary exhibitions, e.g. in 1998 on local maps and mapmaking; prehistory of Galloway; cup and ring marks. It is planned to offer school activity sheets for some of these exhibitions.

· Museum grounds for picnic lunches

Tolbooth Art Centre,
Kirkcudbright

· A new interpretative centre for the story of Kirkcudbright’s art history, set in one of the town’s most important historic buildings. The Museum Curator is available to give an introductory talk to school parties on the building and its history.

· Audio-Visual show (13 minutes) on "The Artists’ Town"

· Permanent display of paintings by Kirkcudbright artists

· Frequently changing programme of temporary art and craft exhibitions (contact the Museum Curator for programme details)

Castle Douglas

· temporary exhibition programme, chiefly involving art and craft exhibitions
but also photographic and historical.
