Wanlockhead Lead Mining Museum
Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village, lies in magnificent country scenery. Burns travelled here on Excise duties. Once, in the winter, his horse slipped on the ice.The blacksmith "frosted" his horse's shoes and Burns repaid him with a sonnet. On another occaision he went on a tour of a lead mine. Nowadays visitors can still go down an 18th century mine at the Lead Mining Museum with its spectacular display of rare minerals. Also in the fascinating village is an 18th century beam engine and miners library.
