Dumfries and Galloway is rich in Dark Age archaeology: lost churches and chapels, beautiful carved stone crosses, hilltop strongholds and some of the earliest Christian remains in Britain. Use this tour to step back in time and discover what has survived from one of the most fascinating periods in our region's past.
WHEN WERE THE DARK AGES?
Around AD 410 Britain south
of Hadrian's Wall was abandoned by the Romans. This event marks the start of the
Dark Ages. The period ends some 650 years later with the establishment of
a secure kingdom of the Scots and the Norman conquest of Anglo-Saxon England.
This period is called the Dark Ages because we know relatively little of life
at the time. Few historical records have survived and most of our information
comes from archaeology.
